Venice Audubon Rookery-Venice, FL

The Venice Rookery is a little island in a medium sized pond on the Venice Area Audubon Society property near the intersection of Jacaranda Blvd and U.S. 41 in Venice, FL.  The island is chock full of nesting Great Egrets and and Great Blue Herons in the spring of the year with hatchlings coming in mid-February to early March.  A great place to visit especially early in the morning with the sun at your back highlighting the birds.  The birds are about 40 feet away, safe from humans and predators so the nesting action is terrific.  Both flight and nesting photos are possible with not that long a lens.  The facility is superb and oftentimes there is an Audubon volunteer to answer questions.  There is free parking and a porta-potty available as well as a picnic shelter.  Other birds are often seen here including the local hawk and Sandhill Cranes resting on the migration route.
