Located at the far north end of Tigertail Beach, the Sand Dollar spit is home to one of the largest Black Skimmer and Least Tern colonies in the early summer months. This is a very delicate spot, often overwashed during storms, and environmentally of great importance as a nesting ground. If you so choose to go, be very careful and fully observant and respectful of the nesting birds. It is over a two mile walk from the Tigertail Beach parking lot if you cross the lagoon; longer if you walk around, so bring plenty of water. Summer storms are also a danger as you will be the tallest item around and there is no shelter. Sand Dollar spit can also be accessed by boat just across from Hideaway Beach on the inside of the entrance to the lagoon. End of May Through most of July are peak nesting times. Respect the roped off area and stay low when photographing the birds.
